Vastu Shastra — Directions, Rooms & Remedies
Vastu assigns each of the eight directions to a planet and an element, and places the rooms of a house accordingly. Unlike the rest of this section it is not read from your birth chart — it is read from your building.
North-east (Ishaan) belongs to Jupiter and water — the direction for the puja room, and the one to keep light, clean and uncluttered. South-east (Agneya) belongs to Venus and fire, which is why the kitchen goes there. South-west (Nairutya) belongs to Rahu and earth and is the heaviest corner, suited to the master bedroom and to storage. North-west (Vayavya) belongs to the Moon and air, and suits guest rooms and anything meant to move on.
Most real homes break several of these rules and cannot be rebuilt. Traditional practice accepts that: the prescribed corrections are light, colour, mirrors, water features and weight redistribution, not demolition. Treat any consultant who opens with structural changes with suspicion.
Vastu and jyotish are separate systems. A vastu problem is not diagnosed from a horoscope, and a horoscope problem is not solved by moving furniture. They are used together only in the sense that both belong to the same tradition.
Questions
Do I need to break walls to fix vastu?
Almost never. Traditional corrections use light, colour, mirrors, water and weight placement. Structural change is a last resort, and a consultant who leads with it is usually selling construction.
Is vastu the same as feng shui?
No. Both concern buildings and direction, but they are unrelated systems from different traditions with different rules. Mixing them produces contradictions.
Does vastu need my birth chart?
No. Vastu reads the building. Some consultants combine the two, but the classical vastu rules are independent of the horoscope.
