How this date is determined
The evening of Phalguna Purnima, immediately before Rangwali Holi.
The bonfire is lit during pradosh on the eve of Holi. Traditional practice also excludes the Bhadra period, which is why the date is taken from Holi itself rather than from the purnima alone.
