Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi, taken at nishita kaal (solar midnight) — the hour prescribed for the Shiva vigil.

Shivaratri is one of the few festivals fixed by a midnight rather than a sunrise, because the vigil itself falls at nishita. Applying the sunrise rule instead shifts the date by a day in most years.
